Oh I couldn’t be more excited if I tried! In less than a month, I’ll be saying goodbye to my family, getting on a plane headed east, and flying to Uganda!
If you’ve been reading the MHP blog for several years, you might remember that shortly after we were married, my husband and I went to India. When I wasn’t loving on little kids in the orphanage, I was glued to the eyepiece of my camera, capturing all the colors, all the people, and all the sights of a country that I had never experienced before. I came back with some of my favorite images I’ve ever taken. And ever since then, I’ve wanted to find a way to use my photography to give back to people.
I heard about this trip – The Archibald Project‘s Media Mission trip – through a friend. She read about it, and texted me, and I applied right away. They interviewed everyone, and a couple weeks later, I found out I was one of 9 people chosen to go! There are photographers, videographers, and writers, all extremely talented. Our job while we’re there will be two-fold. First, in the mornings we get to meet, hang out with, and love on some amazing babies and kids who are in a babies’ home. These kids matter – they matter to God – and we want to show them that they matter to us, too. Second, we will be documenting the stories of some of the kids. We’ll spend the afternoons with the kids and with our cameras, learning about their lives and bringing those stories back to you. Our hope is to raise awareness about orphans and adoption. There are so many ways that we can help – but it’s hard to help if we don’t know there’s a need.
We will all be posting photos and stories while we’re there. You can keep up with what we’re doing in these places:
Instagram: @becschlieman and we’ll be using this hashtag: #tapmediamissionuganda so search for that if you want to see everyone’s work while we’re there. I promise, you will want to.

Interested in helping out? You can share this blog post with your friends, re-gram or share on Facebook any of our work while we’re in Uganda, and just generally tell people about what we’re doing! We want to inspire people to care about orphans in Uganda, in the US, and around the world.
There’s another way you can help, too! I’m packing a giant rolling duffel bag full of things that they need at the orphanage and things that would be fun for the kids there. If you want to donate something for me to take, that would be so amazing! I am going to be in Wilmington on Friday, February 21, and I can pick up any donations on that day. If you have something you’d like to contribute, please email me at [email protected] and we can coordinate pickup! This is the list of things the orphanage needs:
Baby formula for infants
Tylenol or Paracetamol (pain relief and fever meds)
*Clothes 0-5 years (boys and girls)
*Shoes/sandals 0-5 Years (boys and girls)
Disabled children equipment (any thing to help them get mobile, toys that can stimulate them, etc)
Tooth brushes and tooth paste
*Gently used clothes and shoes should be fine. Anything would be such a blessing to these kids.
The above items are what Arise and Shine really needs. I know that so many of you have businesses or Etsy shops with items that would be such an added blessing to these kids to go above and beyond just basic needs. Below is a list of other items that would also be so great to bring to the home. Keep in mind the items are for kids ages 0-5. It would also be really cool if you want to include a hand written note in your package that we can read to the kids
…EXTRA BLESSING ITEMS…
Coloring books or drawing pads
…or anything else you can think of.
When we get back, I’ll have tons of stories and images to share, and you can check back here for a recap of the trip. I can’t wait to show you the faces of all the precious kiddos I meet!
Kristen and Andrew are one of my favorite couples of all time. They are so genuine, so friendly, and as you’ll see, both incredibly beautiful people. They are the kind of people I wish I lived closer to, so that we could be best friends in real life. But, since they’re in Ohio, I guess I’ll settle for getting to share these images with you from their picture perfect wedding day on Bald Head Island.
There were so many emotional moments during their wedding day – the beautiful gifts Kristen received from her family members, their super fun first look, their families praying over them during their ceremony, and the unbridled joy as everyone let loose at the reception. Well, just take a look – you’ll see…
Kristen and Andrew – The things I will always remember about your wedding are the way your love was so strong it was almost tangible, all the genuine excitement from your family and friends to see the two of you married, and the dress. Oh, the dress! Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day – it was truly an honor to be there!

Meredith and Jeff are one of the sweetest couples I’ve ever met. They are the couple you see walking down the street and you know, without meeting them, that they are truly in love. Their wedding day was perfect – a joyful day full of family, celebration and love.
Meredith and Jeff, it was such a joy to be part of your big day! I will always remember these perfect little moments from your day: the charm Meredith put on Jeff’s boutonniere in memory of his dear friend, and how touched he was to receive it, all the dancing (you people know how to party!), the Howling Cow ice cream at the end of the night (Go Pack!), and how genuinely excited both your families were to see you get married. I wish you the best of the best for your marriage!

Caitlin and Chase are such a fantastic couple, and their wedding was absolutely amazing! From the ceremony at the stunning Duke Chapel to the reception at the Washington Duke Inn, every detail was flawless.
Caitlin and Chase – I’ll never forget these three things about your wedding:
1. The amazing details – every single thing was tailored so perfectly to the two of you.
2. The Coach K cake, and how Chase didn’t really want to cut it.
3. The way your love for each other and the joy of your family and friends was so tangible that night.
I loved working with you both, and I wish you all the happiness in the world! Congratulations!

Margaret and Cameron were married at her family’s mill just outside of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. I could go on for pages about how beautiful it was, how incredible the details were, and how sweet and welcoming they and their families are, but I know I can’t do it justice. And I know without a doubt you’ll be able to tell just how in love these two are. It was an amazing day, and one of my favorite weddings of this past year!
Congratulations Margaret and Cameron! The three things I’ll always remember about your big day: how you made me feel like a member of your family from the very start, the way you two get down on the dance floor, and the way your love for each other was so tangible through every little detail of your day. I am so honored that I got to be a part of it!
